Referees are a critical component to the MASA experience. It is a great opportunity to earn money while learning valuable skills/life lessons. MASA will do everything possible to support, encourage, and protect our referees as we cannot continue as a club without a steady pipeline of new refs each year!
Please review this link for full details on how to become a PAWest certified referee. There are a few certification courses needed - 1 online, one in-person offered locally (typically) - and a PAWest approved referee uniform. Once obtained, however, you can referee in MASA or other local clubs in league/tournament play as your schedule allows.
After certification, game assignments are managed through software called GAME OFFICIALS. You will be given a username/password and instructions on how to mark your availability week-to-week so that our referee coordinator can match you with games. Games are assigned based on experience - new refs will naturally start in-house and work to travel once comfortable.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the referee coordinator, found on our Board Members page.
A few other helpful notes:
Referee Uniform
Before you work your first game, you will need uniform, black shorts with pockets (not player shorts), black socks with three white stripes, all black shoes (turf, cleat, or running - your choice), watch with count up chronograph, whistle, flags, cards, paper, and pens. Please do not use a basketball or track style handheld stopwatch or a whistle on a neck lanyard.
You should be able to find gear in person at Officially Sports and online at Dick's or Official Sports International ("OSI"). The uniforms at OSI are the standard. Be careful if you are shopping in person at Officially Sports or online at Dick's that you do NOT buy the college/NISOA/PIAA/High School/Football uniforms. You need the USSF style uniforms.

GameOfficials Website Instructions
Here are some instructions to get onto the MASA group in gameofficials. This will allow you to show up as available to be assigned games for MASA. If you are not interested in being assigned Murrysville youth games (MASA), please ignore this message.
Step 1: Log in to your account in wparefs.gameofficials.net. This is the same website and account you used to sign up for the certification course.
Step 2: Once logged in, there is a list of links on the left hand side of the page under ‘Main Menu’. Click on the one that says ‘My Assignors’
Step 3: That will take you to a page that should show an option to ‘Join New Group’. Click on the link that says “(show)” on the left
Step 4: In the “Group/Assignor Number” field, enter 1142. In the “Group Access Code” field, enter “13 MASA Ref” without the quotations. This is case sensitive and needs a single space between 13, MASA, and Ref otherwise it won’t work.
Step 5: If Step 4 is completed properly, you should now be part of the MASA group. You can now log in to gameofficials.net to set your availability. You should also be able to access it from the ‘My Assignors’ page directly by hitting the ‘Switch’ link next to the line that says “MASA: Murrysville Area Soccer Association”. If your availability dates/times coincide with the MASA games, you will show up as available to me in the system to assign you games. You can set notifications to go to your mobile phone and email. I highly recommend setting it up to go to your mobile phone for convenience and accessibility. This way you will get texts for assignments and can accept them from your smart phone.
